Earlier this year, two supermoms returned to the tennis circuit. Wimbledon then served as the catalyst for the comeback run. It was none other than Tatjana Maria and Serena Williams. The 23-time Grand Slam champion was away from the Tour for over a year because of her lingering injury problems, and the 34-year-old German was on maternity leave and getting ready to give birth to her second kid. Thus, they were both strong contenders for the Comeback Player of the Year 2022 award at the WTA Awards.

Serena Williams isn’t the Comeback Player of the Year!

Fans of the American tennis player believed Williams might win the award for the year’s most amazing comeback. But they might be a little disappointed as Serena Williams did not win the prestigious WTA award even in her retirement year. It was Tatjana Maria’s fans who are over the moon, celebrating their star’s amazing comeback after giving birth a second time.

The official WTA Instagram page announced their winners recently and called the German tennis player the supermom for having a successful 2022 season. This year, she won her second career title and made a brilliant run to the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships. With the announcement, there was also a video of the German star along with her 9-year-old daughter. She shared a little message and said, “Thank you so much for voting for me to be the Comeback player of 2022. It means a lot to me to have all these… with my two kids and my husband. Thanks again and see you in 2023.”

Both mums made their comeback to the WTA tour starting from Wimbledon this year. However, unlike Maria, who made it to the semi-finals, Williams fell short and was out of the Grand Slam tournament after facing defeat in the first round.

Daria Saville was also nominated for the award

A nomination for the same award went to the Australian tennis player who made a comeback earlier this year. Consequently, the 28-year-old’s husband hyped up his wife’s achievements this year when the nominees were released. He congratulated her on Twitter for beginning the year outside of the top 600 and concluding at position 54 despite not playing any matches in the last month of the season.

The Australian tennis player might not have received the honor, but she and her husband are undoubtedly winning over the hearts of fans with their repartee on Twitter.

Do you agree with the outcome? Do you think Serena deserved to win the award more than Tatjana Maria?
