According to the World Health Organization, in 2020, cancer accounted for almost 10 million deaths worldwide. This figure translated to an average of one cancer-caused death for every six deaths, making the disease one of the world’s leading causes of death. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been through the cancer hell twice, first in 2010, and then again in 2023. Miraculously, she managed to beat the deadly disease on both occasions. However, her successful recoveries from cancer weren’t without its challenges, especially during treatment.
American filmmaker and actor Stanley Tucci also knows what it’s like to live life with cancer and overcome it. In a recent interview, Tucci shared his harrowing cancer experience and how it affected his diet. Fellow cancer survivor Navratilova could relate to Tucci’s experience, and she took to Twitter to share her opinion on it.

Martina Navratilova believes Tucci’s cancer encounter was ‘tougher’
In 2018, Tucci was diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer. Following his cancer diagnosis, Tucci started receiving treatments in the form of radiation and chemotherapy. During this phase, eating food became a major challenge for Tucci. He also recalled how his family had to force him to seek treatment. “They had to drag me kicking and screaming, but I wouldn’t be around if I hadn’t done that.”
Recently, the revered filmmaker and actor featured as a guest on Sunday Sitdown, an NBC show. There, Tucci expressed that despite the fact that the cancer treatments saved his life, they also took a toll on what he could eat and how he could eat it. “I couldn’t eat. I had a feeding tube for six months and everything tasted like you-know-what and smelled like you-know-what.”

Tucci went on to say, “It took months and months and months for me to finally be able to eat again and then taste properly again.” Despite partially returning to his normal food habits, Tucci is still required to steer clear of certain food products. In her tweet, Navratilova wrote, “Yikes… I can relate but Stanley definitely had it tougher…”
