Sam Stosur, the Australian tennis player revealed some heartbreaking news regarding her tennis career.  The 38-year-old tennis legend announced the news on social media right before the Australian Open. Although Stosur is excited to play in the home grounds, her fans are now heartbroken after she made the announcement. Samantha had quit playing singles tournaments last season, but nobody was prepared for the legend calling it quits completely in 2023.

A few hours ago Stosur announced on social media that she is taking up permanent retirement after this tournament. Australian Open 2023 will be the last of Stosur’s power moves on court. While fans and Stosur herself are riddled with mixed feelings on this decision, it is undoubtedly exciting to see what new ventures she now will endeavor on.

Samantha Stosur fans are not in a great place right now

Some fans have taken this news as kindly as possible. They have wished her the best on all her future journeys off court.

Samantha’s retirement decision might be a step towards fulfilling her maternal duties sincerely. That being said, the player is not going to be completely off-tennis. “Would love to be involved in some capacity. Still got to work out exactly what that is going to be. I’m too passionate about it, too invested in what all the other players are doing to just walk away. I’ll find something in tennis to do, for sure.” This is what she told the press.

During this last tournament of Stosur’s career, she has teamed up with France’s Alize Cornet to take on doubles matches. In the mixed doubles, she has decided to play with Matt Ebden.

Stosur versus Serena: the match that redefines Stosur’s career

Back in 2011, Stosur probably played what went down in WTA history as one of the most popular tennis matches. She beat Serena Williams in the US Open finals in a super-entertaining match. During the time, Serena was recovering from a foot injury. Stosur ultimately beat Serena in a straight set of 6-2 6-3.

Serena was not all very gracious about her loss. The tennis legend had missed out on 3 slams of the year already owing to her injury. She abused the umpire and turned on more ferocious after every set. However, Stosur remained calm in the face of the Serena storm and played a brilliant match!
