Now that the legend is gearing up to say goodbye, let’s take a trip down the memory lane. Let’s recall the time when Amanda Anisimova, a Maria Sharapova fan, was over the moon when she got a chance to share a pedestal with Williams and receive words of comfort from her.

Anisimova about Serena Williams

In 2019, the 17-year-old, after becoming the youngest woman to reach the last 32 of the French Open since Serena Williams in 1998, shared her emotions and said, “She’s done so much for the sport. I really look up to her. That’s just great to be achieving stuff similar to her win, attention.”

Thereafter, Anisimova disclosed, “When I had a tough loss at Miami Open. I was super upset in the locker room. Serena actually came up to me and we shared a little bit of a chat. That was really nice of her, and I’ll remember it forever.”

Further, when asked about the same, the down-to-earth Williams’ responded, “I was heartbroken when she walked into that locker room, and I wanted to be there for her, because I have been there.”

Anisimova has had an opportunity of testing her skills against the former World no.1. They squared off in the semifinals of the 2020 Aukland Open. There, Williams outclassed the fellow American tennis ace in straight sets of 6-1, 6-1.

Williams retirement tour

The legendary American, after making a comeback in the Wimbledon championships, broke the news of her retirement in an essay written for Vogue. Following that, she enrolled for the hard court based WTA 1000 events which would eventually lead her to the last Grand Slam of the season and her career.

However, Williams lost at Toronto Open post her first victory of this season against the Spanish ace Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. Thereafter, at the Cincinnati Masters, she suffered a harsh 4-6, 0-6 defeat in a clash with the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu.
