‘A Little Disrespectful’ – Hall of Famer Chris Evert Once Expressed Concern Regarding the Future Tennis Generation Alienating Their Fans

Chris Evert established a name for herself during her heyday on the WTA tour. When it comes to calming down before an important match, various tennis players adopt a variety of strategies. Some athletes listen to music to stay upbeat, and Evert wasn’t any different, as she once admitted to using music to relax before a match. However, the ‘Ice Maiden’ also criticized the current generation for being disrespectful while listening to music.

For a couple of decades, she ruled the tennis world. She earned the name ‘Ice Maiden’ for keeping her composure both on and off the court. The legendary tennis player has 18 Grand Slam victories to her name.

Back in 2016, the 18-time Grand Slam champion opened up about the role music played as a part of her pre and post-match ritual and also how the role of music has advanced over the years. Additionally, she talked about a habit that she disliked about the present generation.

According to the tennis legend, music used to help her relax before a match. Listening to music was very relaxing, and it helped with her game pressure. Further, she drew a parallel to how the current generation might be using music as an escape with their headphones on while entering the arena for their matches.

She said, “For [current players], it’s relaxing them or energizing them, depending on what kind of music they like to help them chill, but I think it’s almost a little disrespectful when you walk out on the court and the fans are appreciating you, welcoming you, and you have your headphones on.”

She continued by saying that whenever a player steps onto the court, they should be there with the crowd, as they are there to encourage them. A successful career depends heavily on its support.

Evert was a fan favorite during her time on the tour

The American tennis pro at the time inspired people and brought a revolution in women’s tennis. The legendary player has developed a unique bond with her fans over the course of her more than 20 years on the court. In the history of WTA, the rivalry between Evert and Navratilova played a crucial role in furthering the popularity of women’s tennis.
