Sharing mental health struggles is taboo in the world we live in. It becomes an even more difficult topic when you are an athlete playing at the highest level. But some people have been trying to break the barriers of communication in an attempt to normalize talking about mental health, especially in the sports realm. Naomi Osaka took the first steps when her mental health deteriorated after her withdrawal from the 2021 French Open, and others have followed suit. Now, it’s the turn of Bianca Andreescu, as she talked to The Guardian recently and opened up on a host of issues, including mental health.

The Canadian star who defeated Serena Williams to clinch the US Open and the Canadian Open in 2019 described how she began facing such issues. She further opened up on how she dealt with it and what perspective she tries to maintain now.

The world saw her screams, and the world saw her pain. She badly landed on her ankle while playing against Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Miami Open. It was her third injury in Miami. She earlier had sustained an injury in 2019 and 2021 in Miami.

The Canadian star tried her best to restore her physical health while maintaining the mental one. She began having mental issues last season and decided to take a break from tennis. During her break, she volunteered in a domestic violence shelter and got a view of the world beyond tennis. The tennis star realised in the meantime how tennis overshadows their real self. And even thought of quitting tennis altogether, once. “I started at age seven. We kind of identify ourselves as a sports person. And we kind of forget about the human being,” Bianca said to The Guardian.

The break she took from tennis cultivated an appreciation in her for other things as well. She said, “There are more important things out there than winning or losing or even just playing tennis. I’m very grateful to play but having food on the table is more important, amazing parents, supportive friends, little things like that. Thinking about that has really helped me shift my perspective.”

Andreescu on the loneliness expressed by tennis players

The tennis star commented on tennis stars having to deal with loneliness on an everyday basis in the same interview. “You’re alone out there, you’re alone on the court, you don’t have anyone really helping you. It’s like a lonely, lonely journey in a way,” she said. She, however, opined that finding love and appreciation is something valuable in the midst of this storm of loneliness.
