A Young Venus Williams Once Felt Invincible Enough to Defeat This Legendary American Star

Venus Williams has been ever-present on the women’s circuit for over two decades now. With a vastly experienced repertoire of success, the elder Williams sister has won a fair share of accolades in tennis. Both sisters were coached by their father Richard Williams at a very young age.

Now, two decades later, the duo from Compton are sure to go down as Hall of Famers in the sport. Venus is also a former World No. 1 and has represented the United States of America winning Gold at the Olympics.

Young Venus was confident of beating McEnroe

The sisters were guided by famous coach Rick Cohen. After agreeing to coach the duo, he also called on the likes of McEnroe and Pete Sampras, his former pupils. In the book So You Want to Win Wimbledon, it is revealed that Venus thought she could get the better off the legendary McEnroe.

The excerpt reads, “Venus later got to hit with both pros and told reporters afterwards that she felt she could have beaten McEnroe if the bounces had gone her way.” However, McEnroe did not take too well to those comments.

The American hit back saying he could beat both sisters together if a match ever was to happen. This created a huge stir between Serena and McEnroe on Twitter in the past. In 2018, he also claimed that Serena would rank outside the Top 700 on the ATP Tour.

Will Venus Williams participate at Wimbledon 2022?

Venus Williams is a five-time singles champion at Wimbledon and seven in total. She has not featured since August last year as she turns 42 this week. With questions over her continuity, Williams will aim to return for one final swing in her esteemed career.

Her sister and 23-time Slam champion Serena will also be out from this year’s tournament. Williams suffered an injury in the first-round last year and has not featured since. She is expected to return to the Tour for her home leg of the year.
