Venus and Serena Williams received their early training from the best coaches. Initially, both the Williams sisters were advancing under the supervision of their father, Richard Williams. Later, Richard invited the world-renowned coach Rick Macci to help him shape the highly talented duo. Although Macci wasn’t a part of their family, after spending some time with Richard, Venus, and Serena, he became one.

Therefore, Macci has many stories from the time he was coaching them alongside Richard Williams. And the 67-year-old usually tells them like a proud father in interviews. While some are funny, others depict why they are at the top of this sport.

Rick Macci in a recent interview spoke about how much the parents influence their kids’ game. As he said, “With some coaches, it’s their way or the highway. Get the parents out of here. That never works because when they start losing, they’re going to someone down the road. They gotta blame and someone, you ain’t going home to eat with them. I mean, you’re on the other side.”

Thereafter, while addressing the positive impacts of parents, he took the example of the Williams family and said, “They always say their kid plays better when they win. That’s why I love Richard Williams. They didn’t play any tournaments. And think about it, that’s not the blueprint because they knew how to compete. So if we want to think about it every Monday morning with Richard, it was like a piece of cake. We are not talking about the bad loss on Sunday and the blame game… So that’s what I loved about the Williams.”
