All American Duo Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula Set for Captivating Cancun Encounter as Shades of Serena Williams’ 2002 Semi-final Resurface

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are currently having a great run in the GNP Seguros WTA Finals. The two players are recreating and breaking various records, especially some records created by Serena Williams and Venus Williams during their prime in the Finals. Now, as they both move on to the semifinals, they have once again recreated an accomplishment that came by the younger Williams sister and one of her old rivals.

While most of their accomplishments have come in the singles division, it is hard not to ponder on the remarkable feats both players have achieved. Pegula has been smashing the singles divisions, and her wins have also helped Gauff come into the new record surrounding them. Now, both have achieved a feat comparable to the Williams sisters!

Jessica Pegula is on a perfect run as she managed to beat each player she faced in the round-robin segment. On the other hand, Gauff managed to get two victories after her recent win over Markéta Vondroušová. The two have moved on to the semifinal of the tournament post great exhibit of skills. Gauff and Pegula will be up against each other in the semi-finals, which will be a contest to witness between the compatriots.

In reaching the semifinals, they have managed to form a similar match-up to one that took place between Williams and Jennifer Capriati almost 21 years ago. As per OptaAce on X, “2002 – Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will be the first American players to face each other at the WTA Finals semifinals since 2002, when Serena Williams defeated Jennifer Capriati. Stars&Stripes.”

Either of the two being victorious would bring honor to America. Now, amidst their doubles sheet being marred with losses, it is the curiosity of their next singles that still hosts the most attention of the public. Especially for Pegula, who has been successful in achieving great feats similar to Serena Williams.

Pegula recreates the record of Serena Williams

In her second-round bout, Jessica Pegula beat Aryna Sabalenka with complete dominance and became the only player to have three wins over world number 1’s in the same year. This is the first time such a feat has taken place since Serena Williams did so in 2012. Going ahead, Pegula and Gauff became the first American duo to claim more than eight wins against top 10 players in the same season since the Williams sisters in 2008.

Additionally, Pegula also became the first player since the Queen of the Court in 2013 to claim six consecutive wins against players ranked in the top 10. Now, she will go on to the semifinals and face her doubles partner to have a shot at the Finals. Although they made many records, the stint of one player will come to an unfortunate end.
