Martina Navratilova at that time had the support of the basketball player, Nancy Lieberman. She was vouching for Navratilova to be the no.1 player. She said, “I wouldn’t know what to tell Martina if she doesn’t get No. 1.” Furthermore, she noticed how Navratilova had changed herself according to the needs of the game and incumbent trends.

Lieberman added, “She worked so hard and did everything asked of her. Navratilova had won the French Open and Wimbledon that year and Evert had taken the US Open and the Australian Open. The first half of the year was in Navratilova’s favor and the second was in Evert’s. So, at the Toyota Championships, when they both reached the finals, it was a decider.
