After losing in the US Open 2022, Serena Williams has given a subtle hint about how her illustrious professional tennis career might still be alive. Her spectacular run had to end at some point, but the manner it really did on Friday night underneath the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium further cemented her legacy.

Earlier today, Serena lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in front of a roaring U.S. Open audience with a score of 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1. The three-set encounter featured Serena in an excellent tennis form against a woman who grew up idolizing her.

Williams hesitated to say if she will keep competing, during a post-match press conference when asked about her future in the sport. Instead, she made a suggestion that she might compete in the Australian Open, the following Grand Slam, which will take place in January 2023.

She was asked if she would consider coming back. To which, the Queen of WTA smiled and replied, “I don’t know. I’m not thinking about that. I always did love Australia, though.”

“But yeah, you know what, I’ve come a long way since last year at Wimbledon. Just not sure if that was my last moment or not. Making it a different moment I think is much better.” said the 40-year-old champion.

She also placed emphasis on the fact that she’s still very much capable of battling it out on the court. A cryptic comment.

Serena Williams is “the true legend” in all senses

Serena’s younger competitors, those she has faced in grand slam finals and those who frequently faced her in the early stages, have publicly discussed their respect for her. The new-gen athletes, trying to make their names, fantasize (or used to) about having the opportunity to compete against her at Grand Slam.

But it all depends on whether or not Serena would consider making a return. While it might not be right now (or we wish), Williams will eventually decide to stop competing in sports altogether.

With her outstanding play and ultimate superstardom, she single-handedly underwent a transformation. She will continue to have an impact on future generations. Furthermore, whether she participates in another major or not, her legacy has left the mark.
