During the post-match interview after her first-round win at the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, Osaka revealed that her father was with her at the tournament. She said, “My dad, he’s right there. he’s the guy with the sunglasses even though it’s dark outside. He hasn’t been around for a little minute so it is our first tournament back together and it’s really good for him to be back because he always makes me smile.”

It proved to be a good outing for Osaka, defeating her Chinese opponent, Qinwen Zheng. However, the Japanese star had to dig deep to defeat Zheng in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. It was Osaka’s first victory since her first-round win at the Madrid Open.

Coco Gauff on her rivalry with Osaka

In the next round, Osaka will be up against Coco Gauff of the United States. Talking about their rivalry, Gauff said, “From a competitive standpoint, it would be like Federer and Nadal. I mean emotion-wise. When we’re on court we’re going to fight really hard against each other.”
