The Australian tennis swing sees many tennis stars withdraw due to various reasons. Recently, the 2023 Wimbledon Champion, Marketa Vondroušová, withdrew from Adelaide International. This change of heart came at the last moment, but at the benefit of the 27-year-old Taylor Townsend, who is set to take her place in the tournament.

Vondroušová is not the only one who has announced a withdrawal from Adelaide International. Prior to her, a handful of ATP players also stated that they would be stepping back from the tournament.

Marketa Vondroušová was set to play in the main draw of the Adelaide International, which many players use as a warm-up for the Australian Open. However, the Wimbledon champion announced she would be backing off at the last minute. Her place will be taken by the former doubles number 5, Taylor Townsend.

The news was announced by the official ‘X’ page of Adelaide International, and they also announced the opponent of Taylor Townsend. “Marketa Vondroušová has withdrawn from the Adelaide International. Taylor Townsend will now take her place in tonight’s Centre Court match against [Q] Aliaksandra Sasnovich.”

As of now, the circumstances of Vondroušová’s withdrawal are unknown. Many players often take a break from tournaments before a slam, when facing some physical issue and wanting to solve it before playing at a slam. Working hard to fight in a tournament with fewer points will not be to their benefit, hence the forfeit.

Ugo Humbert was one of the first players to drop out of the Adelaide International. He fell ill during the Brisbane International which caused him to forfeit a match and it seems the issue is yet to resolve itself. Tallon Griekspoor also withdrew from the tournament, but did not share the reason of his withdrawal. He was followed by Roman Safiullin, who took an exit in a similar manner.
