Markéta Vondroušová became the tennis community’s newest sensation after securing her maiden Grand Slam crown in London. During her breakthrough campaign in the grass-court major event, the Czech tennis player dispatched some of the big guns on the WTA Tour. However, it was an off-court conversation that changed her fortunes as she went on to lift the Wimbledon trophy.
During one of her crucial matches, when she was trailing against Jessica Pegula, the current world No. 7 made a phone call—not to her coach but to her husband. That mere phone call became a huge turning point for Vondroušová, who came back with an ultra-aggressive mindset on the court. Reminiscing about the same, the American tennis veteran Tracy Austin recently hailed the reigning Wimbledon champion.

After missing out on the previous edition due to a wrist injury, Vondroušová entered this season’s grass Grand Slam event as an unseeded player. The Czech tennis star performed brilliantly to reach the quarterfinals, where she faced Jessica Pegula and was down 3-1 in the third set. However, during a stoppage due to concerns about potential rain, Vondroušová decided to speak to her husband on a phone call.
