Since then, she has gone on to win a couple of WTA titles. She had a major breakthrough at the 2019 French Open, where she made a semifinal appearance before going down to the eventual champion, Ashleigh Barty, in the last-four clash. En route to her semifinal finish in that tournament, she defeated the current World Number 3, Aryna Sabalenka, and the two-time Grand Slam champion, Simona Halep.

It might prove to be an important psychological victory for Anisimova with the Sunshine Double coming up this month. However, she has a difficult path in Indian Wells where she will potentially face US Open 2021 runners-up, Leylah Fernandez, in the second round. Anisimova will open her Indian Wells campaign against compatriot Emma Navarro.
