Rick Macci is one of the most famous coaches in tennis. The American coach has worked with the likes of Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, Jennifer Capriati, and more. Now, the coach is linked to several players like Emma Raducanu and even Coco Gauff. However, after Gauff’s loss to his ex-student, Macci heaped praises on Sofia Kenin.

Amidst the praise for his former student, there are rumors about Gauff and Macci linking up in the near future. Macci has dropped some advice for Gauff several times this year in the past few months. He has even talked about the American teenage sensation needing special training to get back to form.

Sofia Kenin’s triumph brings praise from former coach

Sofia Kenin started her campaign in Wimbledon in terrific fashion. The 24-year-old caused a major upset by defeating Coco Gauff in the first round of the tournament. However, the path to her resurgence on the WTA tour this year was an arduous task.

 Winning the 2020 Australian Open, the player was expected to have a bright future ahead of her. However, she started struggling with form in 2021.

Kenin’s fall from grace was noteworthy as she went from rank 4 to out of the top 200 in 2022. However, she managed to climb back up to the top 120 this year. It remains to be seen if  the victory over Gauff could be a defining moment in her career – climbing further up the rankings and winning more silverware in the process.

Macci tweeted about her return to form and said, “I mentioned on every podcast the past 2 years do not ever count out Sofia Kenin. You do not lose the talent or the skill. Confidence can go like bang and injuries now you get the daily double. The scariest little creature I ever taught from age 5 to 12. Top ten by years end!“

Meanwhile, a lot is expected from Gauff. And as years go by with her having no grand slam titles to her name, the pressure will only mount. However, at such a crucial juncture in her career, who can be her savior?

Coco Gauff to find a new coach in Rick Macci?

The young American sensation is not performing quite well this season. Her best record in singles this year was the semifinal of the Qatar Open.

At a time like this, it is not surprising that she is being bombarded with requests for coaching. And there seems to be a likelihood of her hiring Rick Macci as her head coach. In his podcast, Patrick McEnroe, brother of John McEnroe, revealed that Macci is in talks with Gauff’s father to address her issues.
