A major upset resulted early on Day 4 of the Australian Open 2022. A resurgent Alize Cornet defeated two-time Grand Slam champion and World Number 3 Garbine Muguruza in the second round of the Grand Slam Down Under. The final score-line read 6-3, 6-3 in favor of the Frenchwoman.

What went wrong for Garbine Muguruza?

The Spaniard was all over the court against her French opponent. She could not generate a single break-point against Alize Cornet in the first set. However, Cornet managed to get as many as 10 break-points on Muguruza’s serve in the first set, out of which she could convert one as she eventually won the first set 6-3 against the Spaniard.

Further, Garbine Muguruza’s win percentage on the first serve was only 57% in the first set as against her opponent’s 76%. Moreover, she created several unforced errors throughout the match which went against her.

Set-2 panned out similarly. She failed to create any chances on Alize’s serve and was broken twice on her own serve. The Frenchwoman’s win percentage on the first serve stood at an astonishing 92% in the second set. Further, Muguruza created as many as 17 unforced errors in the second set as against her opponent’s 5.

Overall, the Spaniard could manage to win 48 points as against her opponent’s 65. It was Muguruza’s errors that let her down and she eventually exited from the opening Grand Slam of the season. Further, Alize Cornet was all smiles after causing a major upset at the Rod Laver Arena. After the encounter, she was seen giving a shout-out to her mother and father.
