Danielle Collins and Other American Players Join Venus, Serena Williams, and Others in Impressive Australian Open Record

The Australian Open is popularly known as the ‘Happy Slam’ as it’s the favorite Slam for the players and they look forward to it to start their seasons on a positive note. In the recent past, this Grand Slam has truly been ‘happy’ for the American players. This year too, American players in the form of Taylor Fritz, Danielle Collins, and others are having an exceptional run at the opening Grand Slam of the season.

The second week of the Grand Slam Down Under began with an upset as Danielle Collins defeated 19th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium. In a tightly fought contest, the American held her nerve to secure points at crucial junctures. She eventually prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 51 minutes.

With her victory, it was the third time in the last six years that there have been three American women in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. In 2017, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Coco Vandeweghe reached the last eight. The younger Williams sister eventually prevailed over her elder sister in the finals to lift the title.

Further, last year Jennifer Brady, Jessica Pegula, and Serena Williams had reached the quarter-finals. Jennifer Brady finished as the runner-up, losing to Naomi Osaka in the finals. Moreover, this year, Danielle Collins, Madison Keys, and Jessica Pegula have reached the quarters.

Tough quarter-final matches await the trio

Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula are in the top half of the draw while Danielle Collins is in the bottom half. A battle with local favorite and top seed Ashleigh Barty awaits Jessica Pegula in the quarters. Meanwhile, Madison Keys will face 4th seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Further, Danielle Collins will take on the in-form Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.
