Venus Williams took to playing her first match in four months at the Auckland Classic. The 42-year-old tennis legend clinched victory against Katy Volynets. In a short interview after the match, Venus confessed to not seeing the situation to its full benefit at first. Considering a match that did not look too promising due to heavy rainfall, Williams broke in with some of her best aggressive moves.

Katie Volynets, who just turned 21 in 2022, led the first set tiebreaker but didn’t make any inroads after the rainfall interruption. According to Venus, although the rain distracted her in the beginning, she later focused on making a comeback and used it as a leverage.

Williams is not at her best this season. She is currently at a world ranking of 1003. For a player who has been no.1, it sure isn’t what we expect. Adding to that, there is the last match that Williams played before this victory at Auckland Classic. She couldn’t make it past the first round at the US Open last year. Her last victory in singles came at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

Considering these factors, it is understandably hard for her to put up with a long rain break in the middle of her match. Venus opened up about this when she said during the post-match interview, “It’s hard when you’re all fired up and just suddenly you have to stop.” However, what is interesting is that Venus did not think it was over for her. Even at the age of 42 and with 49 single titles to her name, Venus is still working on herself.

Although on multiple occasions, Venus and Serena have been unapologetic about their attitude, Venus is not up for changing anything that can risk her chances on court. “I was so mad on the rain break. My coach could barely talk to me, so I’m going to try to improve my attitude.”
