The World No.1 Iga Swiatek is currently enjoying a great run on the WTA tour; As she won four consecutive titles including the ‘Sunshine Double’. Recently, she started her clay-court campaign in a tremendous way by winning the Stuttgart Open. She was all set to compete at the Madrid Open before pulling out of the event owing to an injury concern.

Iga Swiatek decided to withdraw from the Madrid Open right shoulder injury

Swiatek took to Twitter to explain her decision as she wrote, “After intense last weeks and winning 4 titles in a row it’s time to take care of my arm that has been fatigued since the Miami Open. I need a break from playing so intensively in order to treat my arm well and that’s why, unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the Mutua Madrid Open. I’m going to take some time to prepare for Rome and Paris.”

The Polish star further mentioned, “Unfortunately my team and I decided that I need to withdraw from Madrid. I hope to see you next year.”

Meanwhile, WTA also confirmed the withdrawal.

What’s next for Iga?

The news about Iga’s injury might come off as a shocker to some fans. However, as the Polish star mentioned, taking time off tennis will heal her shoulder; as she plans to play in Rome.

Earlier, she won her first clay-court tournament at the Stuttgart Open by destroying Aryna Sabalenka in the final. With this win, she extended her winning streak this year to 22. Before that, she beat Naomi Osaka in the Miami Open final to become the new no.1 in the WTA rankings. With her current run of form, she looked the clear favorite to win the French Open title, before the injury setback.

Also, clay is one of her strongest surfaces. Incidentally, she won the French Open in 2020 without dropping a single set throughout the entire tournament. Now, we are not sure about the timeline of her comeback and also the seriousness of her injury. Tennis fans around the world would love to see her at the French Open this year.
