Bianca Andreescu just can’t catch a break! The Canadian who was hoping to make the most of her time on her home soil—and while it was a rocky road to begin with—proved she’s a fighter! That’s the spirit of a tennis player eager to clinch her first title of the season and get her footing back on the court. But for Bianca? The wait might be a bit longer.

On Wednesday, Bianca was set to take on No. 4 seed Mirra Andreeva. Yet the question buzzing around was if she’d be able to make it work after an injury scare in the previous round against Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova, where she rolled her ankle uncomfortably in the second set.

Despite the pain, she managed to claim the win and make it into the R64 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. But then, right before her clash with the 18-year-old Russian today, the news dropped: “After injuring herself on match point, Andreescu is forced to withdraw from her home tournament ❤️🩹,” Tennis Channel posted on X. It’s hard not to feel for her—once again, injury pulls her off the court just as things were looking up.

The ligaments are a little bit torn, so that takes time, so it’s kind of a day-to-day thing. We can’t really explain it. Maybe it was emotions, maybe I was a little bit tired. I just stepped in a weird way. We’re kind of just saying it was a freak accident,” she explained. “All I could think about is honestly, like why? I even screamed out like, why does this keep happening to me? Just a bunch of emotions. I was super overwhelmed, playing in front of a home crowd, winning the match, right?”

It’s heartbreaking to see the former World No. 4 struggle with yet another injury that’s holding her back from reaching glory again! Six years ago, she was the talk of the town—2019 saw her win three major titles at Indian Wells, Toronto, and a Grand Slam at the US Open! But since then? It’s been a rough run.

Bianca Andreescu’s comeback journey keeps tennis fans hooked. The past five years have tested the Canadian star with injuries. In 2020, a knee issue kept her out of the Australian Open. Then at the 2023 Miami Open, she twisted her ankle badly and had to be taken off in a wheelchair. Still, Andreescu’s determination shines through after every setback.

After a tough nine-month break, Bianca returned at last year’s French Open. She battled her way to the third round, beating Anna Kalinskaya before falling to Jasmine Paolini. Earlier this year, she underwent appendix surgery, sidelining her for another three months. But fate wasn’t done—she twisted her ankle again on Sunday, bringing back those tough memories from Miami.

Her 2025 season has been a strong comeback effort. She skipped the Australian Open this year due to “personal reasons.” Then after a six-month break, she secured her first win in April at the Madrid Open, though she lost in the R64. May saw her reach the Italian Open third round, her first WTA 1000 since 2023, and notably marked Bianca Andreescu’s 100th career main draw win. More recently, Andreescu clinched the 2025 Hopman Cup title with Team Canada!

But with this latest setback, it’s tough to say how the former Slam champion will return with the US Open kicking off in just a few weeks. She seemed quite shattered by the injury in the previous round.

Bianca Andreescu left in tears after injury

On July 28, the home favorite squared off against Barbora Krejcikova in a nerve-jangling opener. Under the evening lights, Andreescu served with fire, saving nine of the ten break points she faced. She stayed aggressive, converting three of her own eight break chances, putting the pressure right back on the Czech star.

The match kicked off with drama as both Grand Slam champs traded break points in their opening service games. But the Mississauga-native was cool as ice, saving four in a row and breaking once to build a 4-2 lead. At 5-3, 15-40, she shrugged off Krejcikova’s late push—reeling off four straight points to snatch the first set right there.

Krejcikova wasn’t done yet, pushing hard in the second and finally breaking Bianca’s serve for a quick 3-0 advantage. But Andreescu simply flipped the script, going on a tear to win 11 of the next 12 points and seizing back the lead at 4-3. From there, she locked down on serve and, for the first time all match, breezed through two consecutive service games without facing a single break point.

Then, just as she stood on the cusp of victory at 5-4, disaster struck—an ankle roll on match point left her visibly shaken. Taking a timeout to have her ankle heavily wrapped, Bianca Andreescu dug deep, returned to the court, and served out the match with gutsy back-to-back unreturned serves. Tears welled in her eyes during the post-match interview: “At the end, I got very lucky. It’s very unfortunate. I don’t know what to say. You guys are everything, honestly, thank you so so much. These moments are never easy. So, I was super happy to be able to pull it through.”

After the high of delivering Team Canada a win in Bari just a week earlier, it’s crushing to see Andreescu leave her home tournament this way. Will she come roaring back for the US Open? Only time—and her fighting spirit—will tell.
