Billie Jean King Dub-Smashing to Michael Jackson’s Song

Billie Jean King, the legendary tennis player, has made an indelible mark on the sport of tennis. Her part in establishing the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) brought a slew of changes in the sport that have promoted gender equality. Understandably, King’s contributions have placed her in everyone’s mind as a serious personality. However, when her dub-smash on one of Michael Jackson’s songs hit the internet, it took her followers and the tennis world by surprise. 

King, the 39-time Grand Slam champion, is a big fan of Michael Jackson and has expressed her love for his music on numerous occasions.

In a post shared by espnW, Billie Jean King and Sarina Morales created a video for “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. The duo executed the dub-smash hilariously.

As the song has nothing to do with King, Michael’s producer Quincy Jones initially wanted to rename it “Not My Lover” because he thought people might mistakenly think it was about the tennis star. However, Michael was insistent on keeping the name.

A stroll into King’s life

King began her professional career in 1968, making herself undoubtedly one of the finest players in the sport. In the 1960s and 1970s, she outshined her competition and won 39 Grand Slam titles in her playing career, including 27 doubles titles. And became the first female athlete to receive $100,000 in prize money in a single season in 1971.

She continued to speak out for women’s tennis until the WTA was established in 1974, and she was one of its core members. The 78-year-old tennis pro also served as the Women’s Tennis Association’s inaugural president (WTA). Prior to that, she competed in and defeated Bobby Riggs in the infamous “Battle of the Sexes” match. It’s interesting to note that the match drew one of largest live audiences for a tennis match at that time.

After a brilliant career, she finally retired from professional tennis in 1983. The United States Tennis Association later renamed the Federation Cup, the Billie Jean King Cup in her honor in 2020. Following her retirement, King published a number of books. Among them was her autobiography ‘We Have Come a Long Way: The Story of Women’s Tennis’.
