Billie Jean King has been a staunch supporter of women in sports. Besides being one of the greatest American tennis players of all time, she is also known for her decade-long battle to advance gender equality in sports and all sectors of society. Recently, the 80-year-old American tennis legend reflected on her pride after seeing the women’s impact on the Super Bowl’s recent success.

Super Bowl LVIII saw an incredible record of female viewership amid the Taylor Swift hype. The match between Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers was the most-watched Super Bowl of all time. According to CBS Sport, this year’s event drew almost an average of 123.4 M viewers including a significant number of female viewers. Despite being on the show for only 54 seconds. Taylor Swift’s effect on the Super Bowl this year has reportedly also helped to add in 5M more female viewers to tune in for the mega event in Las Vegas than last year. As per the New York Post that is almost around 9% increase (58.8M) from the last year. Women accounted for almost 47.5% of the total Super Bowl audience, reducing the gap between males to 6.14 this year.

According to CBC and Univision reports women watching the number of women watching the Championship jumped to 24% from last year with an 11% increase in girls aged between 12-17. There was an 8% increase in women aged between 35-64. Seeing these staggering numbers Billie Jean King tweeted a few lines from a recent post. She wrote, “Just as women’s sports are among the fastest-growing parts of the entire sports industry, women were a dominant story in Super Bowl LVIII viewership figures. Women comprised 47.5% of the game’s total audience. The highest figure ever for the Big Game.”
