Simone Leigh, the renowned artist, has been making waves in the contemporary world of arts for over two decades. Her recent selection as the United States representative at the Venice Biennale has cemented her status as one of the most important artists of our time. Her work challenges the narratives surrounding African-American bodies. The artworks reclaimed them as beautiful, strong, and proud, and celebrate their experiences. Unsurprisingly, her work has garnered the attention of some notable personalities. Among them is the 7-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams.

Venus recently penned an emotional tribute to Leigh. The elder Williams sister, like Leigh, has faced her share of stereotypes and marginalization. In her tribute, Venus spoke about the power of Leigh’s art in challenging those same stereotypes.

In her column in the Time magazine, Williams wrote, “For generations, Black bodies have been stereotyped, marginalized, and commodified, but Simone completely upends that narrative with her sculptures.” Leigh’s art draws on a wide range of historical periods, geographies, and artistic traditions of Africa and the African diaspora. The artist often combines the female body with domestic vessels or architectural elements to point to unacknowledged acts of labor and care, particularly among African American women. Through her work, Leigh often challenges the dominant narratives that have long excluded them.

Focusing on the same, the seven-time Grand Slam champion shared, “She centers the experiences of Black individuals and celebrates Black bodies, specifically female bodies, for their beauty, strength, and pride. In doing so, she inspires generations of Black women to feel empowered.”

Leigh amazed numerous fans with her most striking work, “Anatomy of Architecture.” The series features life-sized busts of women with architectural elements integrated into their bodies. These pieces draw on both the rich history of African architecture and the often-overlooked contributions of women.
