While opening up about the decision, the CAS suggested that they have come up with the decision to revise the ban period and reduce it significantly to a period of 9 months. “The CAS panel unanimously determined that the four-year period of ineligibility imposed by the ITF must be reduced to a period of nine (9) months of ineligibility beginning on October 7, 2022, which period expired on July 6, 2023. As this period expired before the appeal proceedings were even submitted to the TAS, the TAS Commission considered it appropriate to issue the operative part of the arbitral award,” said the CAS.

Not only this, they also suggested that Halep, who consumed Roxadustat did it without any intention and thus, a ban period of 4 years would not do justice to her.

“After carefully considering all the evidence presented, the CAS Commission determined that Ms. Halep established, on the balance of probabilities, that Roxadustat entered her body through the consumption of a contaminated supplement that she used in the days shortly before August 29, 2022 and that Roxadustat, as detected in her sample, came from that contaminated product. Therefore, the CAS panel determined that Ms. Halep had also established, on the balance of probabilities, that her her anti-doping rule violations were not intentional,” CAS further confirmed.

Thus, relief is finally in sight for Simona Halep who has been fighting for her tennis career for over a year and a half. While she suggested that she consumed the substance unknowingly, she went through a lot. However, her constant will to never give up and fight for her rights eventually helped her land major success.
