American tennis legend Serena Williams is among the most popular athletes in the world. After ruling women’s tennis for a long time, Serena recently gave up the sport. Over the years, Serena had varied experiences of being a super-successful athlete. With it, there come certain privileges but there is more to it than just privileges.

In a recent podcast, the 14-time Wimbledon champion specifically spoke about the loneliness one has to experience at the top of any sport. She touched upon both the positives and negatives of doing exceedingly well.

Serena Williams reveals the challenges of top athletes
Serena Williams, the name, is a brand in itself. However, there’s a darker side. The feeling of being there alone. On the podcast, the 41-year-old recently discussed in detail how playing tennis affected other areas of her life.

“Can be lonely at the top. Particularly in tennis, people don’t realize how many hours you spend by yourself. So much so that it was hard for me in a relationship,” Serena said.

She further added, “Coz I’m so used to being alone, every single minute in a day of my life that is like, well, I can’t even be around people. A lot of people don’t realize that, so you get the celebration and it’s great, but behind closed doors, life is different coz you have to live your life.”

However, Serena still found a positive in this negativity. “All that stuff is great because if there is no privacy, it means you are successful and it’s kind of what you want, but it comes at a cost. And it’s worth the cost if you think it is. There is always a tradeoff,” she concluded.

Serena’s father inspired her to be an entrepreneur
Both of Richard Williams’ daughters made it big in tennis. However, the mastermind had plans for his daughters, even if they had failed to do well in tennis. In the same podcast, Serena revealed that her father always told her to have backup options in life.
Further, the 41-year-old revealed that coming from the African American community, they had to work harder to make a name for herself. Serena is among the richest athletes in the world. All her money has not come solely from tennis. The American has invested wisely and is a successful business owner.
