Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, the No. 2 seeded team, were eliminated in the first round of the women’s doubles of the US Open. The American tennis duo accused umpire Christian Rask of “stealing points” as they were defeated 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) by the 2021 U.S. Open runner-up duo Leylah Annie Fernandez and Daria Saville.

During the first round of the women’s doubles at the US Open, fans witnessed some on-court drama as Pegula and Gauff accused the chair umpire of stealing their points.

Pegula rebuked the chair umpire, Christian Rask, for calling a ‘let’ during the decisive set, which the opposition team went on to win. At 7-5, Gauff was about to hit a shot that would have been a point for the Canadian Open champions when Saville called for a ‘let’.

Saville made the decision after a piece of debris which looked like a piece of paper was blown onto the court. The point was scrubbed after the chair umpire called a let. Pegula yelled angrily at the umpire over the decision, and Gauf accused him of stealing points from them.

“She can’t call let!” Pegula complained and was joined in her disapproval of the umpire by her compatriot and partner, Gauff.

“It’s the second time! You’re taking points away from us… You’re stealing points from us,” said Gauff, while accusing the umpire.

Pegula further protested, “She [Gauff] has a sitter right on top of the net. You did not call it until she [Saville] stopped. She yelled in the middle of a point, ‘Let!’, you can’t even f***ing do that.”

Gauff agreed with her partner: “You can’t do that.” Eventually, they lost the match and were eliminated from the US Open doubles.

What’s next for Gauff and Pegula?

The two Americans, who won the Qatar Open and the Canadian Open this year, will be certainly disappointed with their defeat. Earlier this year, they also made it to the French Open final, their best finish as a doubles team in a Grand Slam.

They are still competing in the US Open singles, with Gauff currently facing her compatriot Madison Keys in the third round. Pegula, meanwhile, will battle against Yue Yuan on Saturday.
