Serena Williams has gone against very challenging competitors during her almost three-decade-long career. However, nothing was more challenging than battling with issues followed by her childbirth back in 2017. After giving birth to Olympia, Williams suffered an issue with breathlessness. This eventually led to another surgery just after going through the arduous childbirth process. This is something she does not want to experience again.

Hence, while sharing her pregnant workout regime, she has made sure to focus on breathing. This becomes her priority during any sort of workout routine she is going through.

Serena Williams is playing safe to not go through her breathing ordeal once again

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has persevered in the worst of situations on the court after turning the tide in her favor. However, when it came to her health, she did not have any control, especially after giving birth to Olympia. She battled severe breathlessness then and hence she wants to be in control now.

Recently, Williams took to her YouTube channel to break down her pregnant workout regimen. While doing a squat workout, she stated, “So, when I am working out, I always make sure that I work on my breathing cuz for me I know that my breathing becomes very challenged.

She also disclosed that her breathlessness is still an issue as she feels the stress while she works out. Williams added, “I think the baby is sitting on everything that helps you breathe, it seems.” Giving an example, she said, “Like if I’m doing my squat, I make sure I am (leaving a deep exhale) really breathing.”

Furthermore, she broke down the dynamics of her squatting routine. While giving a demo, she said, “I usually like to exhale when I come up and inhale when I go down. So, very important to make sure that I breathe when I work out.”

Williams is probably training her lungs to not go through the life-threatening ordeal she had to go through after giving birth to Olympia.

How did a breathing issue lead Williams to face a life-threatening issue?

After giving birth to Olympia through a C-section, Williams faced incessant coughing issues and a breathing problem. But Williams was self-aware, and she told the nurse to get her a CAT scan and heparin drip.

However, the nurse brushed it off, saying that all the medicines are making her talk “crazy”. But Williams pushed and called the doctors. After the tests were done, she was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism.

Under this, blood clots clogs the arteries, blocking the flow of blood to the lungs. She immediately underwent a new surgery.

Fortunately, her perseverance against all odds led her to come out safe and alive. Hence, she is not risking her health this time and is preparing beforehand.
