The 2018 US Open finals between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka has to be one of the most controversial matches of all time. The chair umpire Carlos Ramos also became the center of attraction. Williams accused him of making a “sexist remark” after he gave her three code violations. Ramos is one of the most decorated coaches of all time and he is finally bidding the sport farewell after overseeing his final match at Estoril Open on home soil.

Despite having a glorious career of 32 years, the coach is best known for his role at the 2018 US Open finals. And now, after Williams bid farewell to the sport last year, he is also off the podium.

Carlos Ramos has an astounding record of umpiring 10 Grand Slam titles finals, an Olympia singles final, and five Davis Cup finals. A full-time ITF gold badge umpire umpired his final match at the Estoril Open, where Casper Ruud won.
The Portuguese chair umpire is best known for a sensational controversy at the finals of the US Open 2018. He gave three code-of-conduct violations against Williams. This led her to lose a point and then a game. Eventually, in the end, Naomi Osaka defeated her in a straight-set match. This led her to call him a “liar” and a “thief” and she also accused the umpire of making a “sexist remark”.

The whole drama hit the headlines and Ramos came to the limelight. However, the coach is renowned for his just conduct on the court. Therefore, at the Estoril Open too, the coach was sent off in a celebratory way. He stated, “Tennis and refereeing made me the person I am and I am very grateful to tennis, to the Portuguese public, to my friends.”

Why did Williams put allegations about Ramos at the 2018 US Open?
It started when the French coach, Patrick Mouratoglou made some hand gestures trying to coach Williams. The coach accepted he did that, however, Williams denied even looking at him. This all started in the second game of the second set after Osaka won the first set.

She called him a “liar” and a “thief”. Then, she again got another code violation for “verbal use”. This eventually led to a game penalty and erupted a huge controversy where she felt the umpire had made a “sexist remark”.
