The beginning of each year starts with fun in sports and cinema, although snubs are an eventual conclusion to January as well. Last year’s box office hit Barbie, depicting how patriarchy works against women in the minutest of ways, has inspired outrage in the last few days. The reason? A major rebuff from the Oscars for both Robbie and Gerwig. Another slap in the face is Ryan Gosling getting nominated for the male supporting role, sadly proving the point of the movie. Joining enraged fans on the internet are tennis sensations Billie Jean King and Chris Evert.

Both women empowerment advocates in tennis, Evert and King made it a point to voice out their disappointment over their official social media accounts as well.

Billie Jean King and Chris Evert are furious over Barbie’s Oscar nominations, or lack thereof

When activist Shannon Watts posted about the irony of Ken, aka Ryan Gosling, getting a huge nomination instead of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, Chris Evert was as furious as the rest of the internet. Watts wrote on X, “Greta Gerwig: Made a critically acclaimed, culturally profound, feminist movie about Barbie and the patriarchy that made a billion dollars at the box office. Oscar nomination goes to … Ken.”

Chris Evert reposted the tweet with the caption, “I’m sorry; how is this…. Possible???” reiterating the sentiment that many were feeling. While Barbie did get 8 Oscar nominations in total, fans believe Greta Gerwig not getting a Best Director nomination and Margot Robbie being snubbed for Best Actress is an affront to the movie.

Even Billie Jean King was heavily disappointed. She posted on her official X account, “Really upset about #barbie being snubbed, especially in the Best Director category. The movie is absolutely brilliant, and Greta Gerwig is a genius.”

Even she thinks that the two of them should have gotten into the nominations and not just Ryan Gosling for Ken, ultimately defeating the point of the movie. Ever the advocates for women’s rights, the two have been fighting for equality in tennis for as long as fans can remember.
