Charlotte steps up as possible host for WTA finals amid concerns about Saudi Arabia

After some controversy about the WTA Finals possibly happening in Saudi Arabia, sources say Charlotte is now being looked at as the new host starting in 2027. The WTA thought about having the 2024 Finals at the Spectrum Center, but nothing’s decided for that yet.

Because of the fuss about Saudi Arabia, the WTA is thinking about where to have the Finals for the next three years, up to 2026. Charlotte seems like a good option, especially since the Spectrum Center will finish $215M in upgrades by 2025, making it a more appealing choice for the WTA Finals from 2027 onward.

Thus, while further details are still unclear about the whereabouts of the WTA finals, it will be exciting to see which place will the WTA Finals be eventually held.

Saudi Arabia has seen a lot of backlash from the fans and even the legends of the game. Recently, Martina Navratilova joined hands with Chris Evert as they came ahead and voiced out their opinion on holding the WTA Finals in Saudi.

Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert join hands as they oppose the idea of organizing WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia

In an interview earlier this month, the two stars came ahead and suggested that Saudi is a country that does not give equal rights to women. Not only this, but it also does not support the LGBTQ community. Thus, going to a place where freedom has been put into question is of no use, per the legends.

Not only is this a country where women are not seen as equal, it is a country which criminalises the LGBTQ community. A country whose long term record on human rights and basic freedoms has been a matter of international concern for decades,” they said in the interview while opposing the idea of organizing WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia.

Taking the WTA finals to Saudi Arabia would represent taking a significant step backward, to the detriment of the WTA, women’s sports and women. We ask the WTA to give thought to all these considerations,” they further continued.

Thus, amid the ongoing saga surrounding the lace where the WTA Finals will be held, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert came ahead and sparked their opinion while suggesting that they are strictly against the finals being held there.
