The spotlight has recently shifted to the Middle East, where attempts to secure prestigious events have stirred a dichotomy within the tennis community. Navratilova expressed genuine apprehension, “I absolutely would worry. I would worry for them as women. I would worry for them as gay women.”

This highlights the concerns for the safety and rights of female players in Saudi Arabia. Navratilova’s stance also reveals a cautionary tone, questioning the ethical implications of prioritizing financial gain over human rights. Evert was found aligning herself with Navratilova’s concerns. She  called for a thoughtful examination of the cultural and legal landscape in Saudi Arabia.

Navratilova is a torchbearer of this legacy as she continues to champion the cause. King initiated the conversation but it was Navratilova who steadfastly kept the flame alive.
