In the professional world of tennis, the player’s box can be vital to the athletes in terms of support and strategy. But for Coco Gauff, it is more than just that. During a recent interview, Gauff revealed how sometimes it can also be a source of stress, especially when her father, Corey Gauff, is present there. She further explained why she prefers her “emotional father” to watch her game from a distance.

Coco Gauff, in her latest interview, talked candidly about the effect of her father’s behavior at her games. Gauff stated, “My dad doesn’t give the best reactions in the box.” Corey, who is well known for his expressiveness, reportedly distracts Gauff with his “frustrated dad in stands” style, which includes stomping his feet and waving his arms. Referring to these intense reactions from her father, Gauff further added, “He’s a very emotional person.”

Notably, Corey Gauff has played a crucial role in building his daughter’s career. Be it coaching her since childhood or taking her to different matches to increase her intrigue for tennis, he has always pushed her to perform better. So naturally, when Corey sees her lose a point in her game, his reaction is filled with intense emotions. Gauff admitted this and said, “Sometimes when I lose a point, the first thing I look at is the box.”

However, she confessed that seeing her father’s genuine reaction to her game is somewhat comforting for her. “And there’s something more reassuring seeing somebody clapping,” she further added. But Gauff, while admitting about her desire to “play for herself” said she doesn’t want any distractions during her match. Therefore, her fans have witnessed a noticeable change in her latest matches.

Remarkably, during recent victories, Corey Gauff hasn’t consistently been in Coco Gauff’s box. She won championships in Cincinnati and Washington, D.C., without her father supporting her from the sidelines. Gauff chose to watch his daughter play from a suite or a private room, even during her US Open matches. But Gauff does not want to completely dismiss her father’s feelings after her victories. Even after her US Open victory, she addressed how her father’s reaction was something she witnessed for the first time.

Coco Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam at the US Open, also made history by being the first American teenager to win the tournament after Serena Williams did so in 1999. And after her momentous match, she expressed how her father reacted to the game. “Today was the first time I’ve ever seen my dad cry. He doesn’t want me to tell y’all that, but he got caught in 4K. He thinks he’s so hard, but [he’s] not,” Coco Gauff said after the game.

The 20-year-old Tennis star also added that it was her father who brought her to the same stadium where she won her title as a kid to watch her idols play. “My dad took me to this tournament, sitting right there, watching Venus and Serena compete, so it’s really incredible to win on this stage.”
