The Met Gala on May 6th was a starry affair! There was no shortage of celebrities from across the globe as actors, artists, musicians, and sports personalities, among others, made their presence felt. The tennis world was also well represented as the likes of Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova attended the Met Gala in shimmering gold, sparkling beads, and yellow and greens. Further, Zendaya, whose recent movie is based on tennis, Challengers, was also seen glittering in two different outfits! Amid all this, there was one notable absentee in the form of Coco Gauff.

Ever since her exploits at the US Open last year, the American tennis sensation has become one of the most popular athletes in the tennis fraternity. As a result, she was invited to attend the Met Gala but couldn’t attend due to a peculiar reason.

On a recent interactive session with her fans on TikTok, Gauff gave details about her Met Gala invite. During the TikTok Live, she revealed, “I kinda got invited to the Met Gala but couldn’t go because of schedule.” A fan posted the statement with a screenshot of the live, followed by multiple faces with head bandage emojis. With this, Gauff confirmed that she actually got an invitation from Anna Wintour, who has been the chairperson of the Met Gala since 1995.

Gauff was busy playing in the European swing of the clay-court season. The American tennis sensation participated in both Madrid as well as Rome and hence couldn’t make it to the Met Gala in her home country. This comes after Gauff had expressed her curiosity to attend the grand event. But with her tennis commitments taking the driver’s seat, Gauff hopes to attend the event in the future.

Coco Gauff wants to attend the Met Gala but not at the cost of clay season

Last year, during an interview at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the reigning US Open champion opened up about wanting to make her presence felt at the Met Gala. As was the case this year, Gauff also had a busy schedule in 2023, due to which she couldn’t attend the event.

Gauff revealed, “Yeah, and I would say Met Gala is one of them. I think it’s during the clay season, so that’s probably the only other one. I’m like the only way that will work out, I will have to miss like an important part of the season, which right now, you know, early in my career, probably won’t happen. Maybe later on, but yeah, I would say Met Gala is the next one.”

It goes to show how dedicated Gauff is in her tennis career and that she is willing to miss such a grand event due to her tennis commitments. She will be seen in action at the French Open, which begins later this month.
