You know how when you’re really focused on something, time kind of flies by? That’s how it is for Coco Gauff right now. She’s just focused on winning each match at the Australian Open. She recently beat Leylah Fernandez pretty easily in the third round, 6-3, 6-2, which was awesome. But it wasn’t just about the win – it was about how she managed the pressure of playing back-to-back matches. She said she keeps things chill! How?

After her straight-sets victory over Jodie Burrage in the second round, Coco Gauff opened up about her pre-match routine for the first time. During the post-match press conference, she mentioned her boyfriend as part of her daily activities: “Usually I just go to the gym in the morning at the hotel, do something pretty light, and then just sit in my hotel room. Today I was just watching tennis and talking to my boyfriend, and that’s about it,” highlighting his active presence in her routine one way or another.

So far, Gauff hasn’t dropped a set this season, winning all eight of her matches. She triumphed in all five singles at the season-opening United Cup, including three wins at the Australian Open, including the latest against Fernandez. “I think it was harder because she knew what to expect, and I definitely think she played a little bit different today than at the United Cup,” Gauff said, despite riding an impressive 16-set winning streak. However, the only obstacle for her was the time of the match.

It took place at 7 PM local time at Margaret Court Arena. Which meant Gauff had all day to anticipate it. Yet, sticking to her routine seems to work best for her. During her post-match press conference, Gauff shared what she did throughout the day ahead of the match. “Same routine, went to the gym a little bit, watched tennis, talked to my boyfriend. Yeah, I don’t really eat room service, order room service. That’s about it, yeah,” she said.

“When you play at night, it’s just like the day just feels long and then all of a sudden it’s like 3:30 and it’s like time to leave, time to go inside and then everything just feels fast,” she added. Imagine the nerves players feel before a match. Add a few hours of waiting, and they can lose their entire day to anxiety. But Coco Gauff, who teamed up with new coach Matt Daly during the 2024 Asian Swing, didn’t let fear overwhelm her.

However, her routine used to include one important step. Back when Gauff won the 2023 US Open, she shared in an interview how she carefully monitored her food intake. She avoided mushroom pasta—her favorite—before matches because it caused her stomach aches. “I do love mushrooms in pasta; I just don’t eat them pre-match,” she noted during an interview. But why?

Well, it’s a simple precaution as she noted, “They make my stomach kind of hurt a little bit, but also, I don’t know if it’s just in my head too sometimes. I’m usually not superstitious — just with that.” But does the American sensation really have anything to worry about?

On the other hand, while she keeps pre-match activities limited, she knows how to celebrate afterward.

Gauff spends her first win at AO at the movies

Gauff’s recent partnership with technique correctional specialist Matt Daly appears to be paying off, helping her regain confidence on the court. On January 13, the third seed at the 2025 Australian Open showcased her talent at Rod Laver Arena with a commanding performance against fellow American Sofia Kenin. She cruised to a straight-set victory of 6-3, 6-3, marking a significant turnaround from her struggles with serving during last year’s American swing.

After her impressive first-round win, Gauff took advantage of a two-day break before her next match by indulging in a trip to the cinema in Melbourne. She caught the 2024 animated film “Mufasa – The Lion King” and later shared her thoughts on Instagram.

“Lol one thing about me is if I play first on I will most likely be going to a movie after the match. This was good! I enjoyed it,” she wrote. Gauff’s love for movies is evident; just last month, she excitedly revealed on her Instagram Story that she finally watched ‘Interstellar’ calling it “amazing.”
