Coco Gauff defeated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in her R32 match at the BNP Paribas Open a few hours ago. This was her sixth straight victory against an Italian opponent. But did you know this was Coco Gauff’s last singles match as a teenager? Well, the countdown has already started and the American tennis sensation will turn 20 on March 13. And, as things look like, she will now take on Belgium’s Elise Mertens in her next match on her birthday.

Coco Gauff shared a post on her Instagram stories with the caption “Byeeee 20 soon” along with two ‘laughing’ emojis. The post clearly highlighted her incredible feats throughout her six-year journey as a pro tennis player. In 2019, Gauff became the youngest to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon at the age of just 15. However, she not only qualified for the mega event at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club but also shocked the world with her victory against the seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams.

With this victory, she became the youngest to win at the Wimbledon since 1991. Three years later, in 2022, she reached the finals of the French Open and in 2023, she finally did it. Gauff became the 2023 US Open champion and also clinched the Cincinnati Open that year.

Talking more about her feats on the court, she reached the world number 3 during her teenage. Since the introduction of the WTA 1000 format almost 15 years ago, no teenager has made as many R16 appearances as Coco Gauff (16). No other teenager has won as many matches as Coco Gauff (51). But what present does she want for her 20th birthday?

She answered this question in her post-match interview, stating, “I don’t know. I’m just happy to be alive. I’m really happy to see 20. I don’t want to jinx it. Hopefully, I’ll see 20.” What did she say, reflecting on her win in her last singles match as a teenager?

“I think 21 is more the bigger age for more Americans” – Gauff

Coco Gauff’s birthday always coincides with Indian Wells. “I mean, every year at this tournament it’s going to be my last match of some age. So, yeah, it doesn’t feel weird, no. Yeah. I mean, I haven’t really thought about it tennis-wise or off the court, honestly. Yeah, it’s not like a huge milestone, you said, in the U.S., just turning another age,” Gauff said.

She further went on to add, “Yeah, no, a lot of people don’t really think about it being not a teenager anymore. I think 21 is more the bigger age for more Americans. Yeah, I haven’t really put too much thought in it.
