“My family is incredibly supportive and they’re always in my corner no matter what. To them I’m a daughter and a sister before I am a tennis player. So, I think it’s really important for me to have those people around me that keep me grounded. Especially, when things can feel hectic or overwhelming or just out of my control,” said Emma Navarro, in a press conference after her US Open exit in the semis. Now, the American tennis player has revealed her unconventional New Year’s resolution, which involves her family.
Labor Day typically signals the unofficial end of summer, and for Coco Gauff in 2024, it arrived a day early. In September, Emma Navarro, once again proving to be a formidable opponent, defeated the defending US Open champion 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. This marked Navarro’s second consecutive Grand Slam victory over Gauff, following her straight-set win at Wimbledon just two months prior. Well, right now, Navarro is focused on family rather than on Grand Slam victories.
In a January 1st interview with the WTA, the young tennis star opened up on her struggle to stay connected with her loved ones during her busy travel schedule. Sharing her heartfelt resolution, Navarro said, “In 2025, I am manifesting keeping in touch with my family more when I am on the road because I have a bad habit of going a little bit MIA when I am on the road. So I am going to call my family more.”

Her commitment to family comes after an incredible 2024 season. Navarro achieved a 54/25 win-loss record, excelling on various surfaces with a 33/14 record on hard courts, 14/8 on clay, and 7/3 on grass. She climbed to her career-best ranking of No. 8 in the world and claimed the Hobart International title.
The start of her 2025 season, however, has been less promising. Navarro faced an early exit at the Brisbane International, losing in the first round to 113th-ranked Brisbane wild card, Kimberly Birrell.

Well, the demands of the tennis calendar and constant travel make maintaining close family ties challenging. However, she is not the only one who has revealed her non-tennis resolution.
Like Emma Navarro, Coco Gauff also has non-tennis resolutions
Coco Gauff revealed an unexpected New Year’s resolution during an on-court interview after defeating Croatia to book her their place in the quarter-finals. That was reading more books in 2025. Initially hesitant to share her goals, Gauff eventually opened up, saying, “I’ma try to read more books. This year I read like 16 (books) or something like that, so I’ma try to go for like 22. Let’s go for that.”

Her new goal highlights a passion that aligns with one of her fiercest rivals, Poland’s No. 1, Iga Swiatek. Known for her love of literature, Swiatek has previously embraced her “bookworm” persona. She even launched a 12-book challenge during the 2023 season. On World Book Day, Swiatek encouraged fans to join her literary journey, sharing, “I’ve already read 5 or 6 books (I lost count of how many).”
For Gauff, the goal of reading 22 books reflects her interest in continuous growth and learning, even amidst her demanding tennis schedule. Whether it’s competing in Grand Slams or diving into a new novel, Gauff’s 2025 resolution promises a balance between athletic excellence and intellectual curiosity.
