Coco Gauff gets a tennis reality check

After winning the last major title for the year 2023, the world’s third-ranked tennis player has faced a lot of ups and downs in the following tournaments. However, recently, in a podcast, Match Point Canada, famous biographer Christopher Clarey talked about what the expectations were from the 19-year-old after the major victory and what they actually turned out to be.

He stated, “It looked like Coco Gauff; we thought she might take off after winning the US Open. She hasn’t done that, she had some early losses, has looked vulnerable in the same ways that she did before with the forehand and the second serve breaking down on occasion.”

As someone who has already written a book on Federer, and is writing a book on Rafael Nadal, his knowledge about tennis players is quite evident. He clearly stated that while a lot of vulnerability on the court was expected from the US Open champion’s side, she has faced some early losses, leaving all the expectations behind.

However, this is not the first time someone has talked about what the future holds for the 19-year-old after the major victory. Just a few weeks ago, former tennis player Eric Riley gave a piece of strong advice on how Gauff can move forward after her huge 2023 tennis achievement.

Eric Riley’s advice for Coco Gauff

In one of the tennis channels Inside In, Riley talked about how the third-ranked tennis player has to improve her game quality to even achieve victories this year. She said, “The quality of the work that you did to win the US Open is not going to win you in 2024 is not going to win a major. So, Brad knows that. She’s going to have to play better this year, and she’s gonna have to improve between shots for like I said earlier, you got to work on weaknesses.”

Following that, she also advised her to get better this year in terms of her shots or gaming strategies, while working on her weaknesses. Not only that, she also highlighted that this will help her build her own confidence, on and off the tennis court.
