The revised rankings of the WTA saw Ashleigh Barty claim yet another record. Just days after an incredible campaign at the 2021 Wimbledon Championship, the Australian has now walked into her 77th consecutive week as World No. 1. This is her longest streak of consecutive weeks at world No. 1.

With this milestone, she moves closer to surpassing legends like Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, and a few others, who are currently leading the pack in most consecutive weeks at World No. 1.

The 25-year-old put on a brilliant performance to outclass the Czech International, Karolina Pliskova, in the 2021 Wimbledon Championship final. Following her win, Barty joins the list of the elite in the 9th position on the table. She is just three weeks away from moving up into the 8th position, surpassing Martina Hingis [80 weeks].

Given her current form, her World No. 1 title isn’t going away soon. However, she will have to fight to make it to the top of this list. To make it to the very top, she will have to surpass the records of Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Monica Seles, who sit in the 7th [87 weeks], 6th [90 weeks], and 5th [91 weeks] positions, respectively. The legacy of these players is such that they have also beaten their own records, with Steffi Graf again in the 4th position [94 weeks], Chris Evert [113 weeks] in the 3rd position, and Martina Navratilova in the 2nd position [156 weeks].

A determined Ashleigh will surely eye the top spot. But a staggering record of 186 weeks guards the top position, courtesy of Serena Williams and Steffi Graf.

The thrilling final

Ashleigh Barty has been in incredible form. Repeatedly, she has proved her doubters wrong and lived up to her No. 1 rank. Right from the start of the final, she looked agile, fully focused, and ready for battle. Her counterpart, however, lacked the same attitude initially. Looking for a breakthrough, Ash took advantage of Karolina’s weakness, increased her attack, and pressured the former World No. 1 into committing unforced errors. Doing so, she won the first set 6-3 and took one step closer to her dream title.

However, just when everyone thought she was down and out, Karolina came to life and turned the game on its course. Heading into the second set, she looked fierce, winning hard-fought points, and taking the game to Ashleigh. She thoroughly entertained the crowd winning the second set 6-7.

Ashleigh Barty – The champion

Everything was on the line in the third and final set. The momentum of the game had shifted into Karolina’s favor. However, showcasing her mental strength and character, Ashleigh did not let her opponent’s fight back lower her confidence. She once again started the set, looking in fine touch, winning points rather smartly.

With her every swing, the crowd cheered her on more and soon the game was done and over. Ashleigh Barty became the first Top-Seed to clinch a Wimbledon Championships title, since Serena Williams in 2016.
