Now that she is in the twilight of her competitive journey, Danielle Collins has competed in nearly every tournament, from Grand Slams to WTA 1000 events. The American tennis star, however, has yet to mark her participation in the Olympics, where she has never played before. But with her recent Miami Open triumph, things have now changed for Collins, as it has opened the doors for a place in this season’s Paris Olympics.

The former number 7 player recently made headlines at her home hardcourt tournament as she won her first WTA 1000 title in Miami Gardens. In a straight-set championship game, Collins overcame the fourth seed, Elena Rybakina, with a score of 7-5, 6-3. With her triumph at Hard Rock Stadium, the 30-year-old player has now surpassed her compatriot Madison Keys in the top 4 American WTA player rankings.

Keys, who faced a round-of-16 defeat in the second part of the Sunshine Double, was sitting in the fourth spot in the American rankings before the tournament commenced. But now that Collins has passed Keys, the newly crowned champion has a great opportunity to secure a place on the American team for this season’s Olympics in Paris. As only the top four ranked players from each country get to participate in this esteemed sporting event, Collins will be a part of her country’s tennis team as things stand now.

However, alternatively, the scenario could quickly change, as she will need to maintain her top rankings before the Olympics, as Collins will compete at various tournaments, including two Grand Slam events.

After her remarkable run in Miami, the American player will now mark her participation at the upcoming Charleston Open. Collins, who will lock horns with her Spanish colleague Paula Badosa in the first round, will need to reach the latter stages to get more ranking points.

Aside from the WTA 500 tournament, the former number 7 player will also participate in both major events this season, the French Open and the Wimbledon Championship. With the Grand Slam tournaments awarding the most points on the tour, Collins can further solidify her position in the top 4 American player rankings before the Paris Olympics.
