Yesterday, Serena Williams stepped on the tennis court in search of an elusive 24th Grand Slam title. Her last major title came way back in 2017 at the Australian Open. Since then, she has reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament on four occasions, finishing second best in all of them. The fact that she is just a major title away from equaling Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles is driving her to play at the age of 40.

In her first singles match in over a year, the former World Number 1 went down fighting against France’s Harmony Tan in a thrilling battle. She gave it all before running out of luck in the super tiebreaker in the third set. Following her defeat, she opened up about her future at the tournament.

Serena Williams hopes to come back stronger

During the post-match interview after her first round defeat against Harmony Tan, the 40-year-old was asked if this would be a satisfying last Wimbledon memory. She replied, “Definitely not. But today I gave all I could do today. Maybe tomorrow I could’ve gave more. Maybe a week ago I could’ve gave more. But today was what I could do. At some point you have to be able to be ok with that.”

Reflecting on her performance during the match, she said, “I think physically I did pretty good. I think the last couple points, I was really suffering there, but I feel like in just those key points, winning some of those points, is always something mentally that you have to have, that you kind of need. I did pretty good on maybe one or two of them, but obviously not enough.”

Serena set to lose her WTA singles ranking

Earlier this year, the WTA and the ATP announced their decision to strip Wimbledon of ranking points following their ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes. The younger Williams sister will lose all her ranking points earned last year due to her lengthy injury layoff.
