Form is temporary, Class is permanent. The 22-year-old Polish former world number one, Iga Swiatek proved it yet again. She bulldozed Liudmila Samsonova in the China Open to clinch her fifth title this season. Her impressive run includes a victory at Roland Garros, Doha, Stuttgart, and Warsaw. More glorious days to come for Swiatek this year? We’ll wait and see.

However, she has managed to put her name beside one of the greatest players in this sport, Serena Williams. The French Open champion has now become the second player to claim five or more titles in successive seasons. From self-doubts to facing criticism over the downfall of her performance, Iga has seen it all. After her fourth-round exit at the US Open last month in the hands of Jelena Ostapenko to her exit from the WTA-500 event in Tokyo to Kudermetova. The journey hasn’t been easy for the number two and she got emotional after the win in China.

When she was asked about her shedding of tears after her 69-minute show she said, “I cried a little after winning because I know how hard it is to stay positive & stay focused on the future. Maybe not to all of them, but for me. I have felt immense support from my team in recent weeks. I am very grateful for that. During the match I didn’t think about anything, I wanted to focus on tennis.
