It’s the fifth day of the French Open 2021 and the fans saw a huge upset today. World No.1 Ashleigh Barty lost in the second round of the Grand Slam. Magda Linette began the set quite beautifully as she won the first game of the set. However, with the help of some amazing forehand winners, Ashleigh Barty equalled the scoreline in the very next game.

Linette once again took the lead after the second game and gave the World No.1 player no chance after this. She broke in the third game and was now leading 3-1. Barty was looking in some pain as she hasn’t recovered fully from her arm injury yet.

In the fifth game, the Polish player delivered some really powerful serves, making Barty look absolutely clueless. She won four back-to-back points and as a result, took her lead to 4-1. She gained three break-points in the subsequent game as well. Even though Barty tried really hard to stop her, Linette capitalized on the second break-point and broke yet again in the set.

Serving for the set, the Polish player didn’t take long and won the set, 6-1 on her first set-point.

Barty took a big medical time-out after the first set, owing to immense pain. Despite that, she came back on the court and tried to fight back. The Australian even began the set on a high as she won the first game. However, Barty was still not 100% fit.

As a result, when the scoreline of the second set was 2-2, she decided to retire from the match. It was surely not the way Barty would have wanted to end her French Open 2021 campaign. However, her arm pain forced her to retire in the middle of the match.
