An open letter of concern and advice for Serena Williams

Tennis legend Chris Evert, who herself had won 18 grand slam titles, was worried about the halt of the player. Therefore, she wrote an open letter in the May issue of Tennis Magazine to Williams, addressing some core issues. She wrote“Do you ever consider your place in history? I wonder whether 20 years from now you might reflect on your career and regret not putting 100 percent of yourself into tennis.”

She aimed at her other engagements apart from tennis. Evert stated, “These distractions are tarnishing your legacy.” Moreover, she reminisced about the time when she thought that Serena Williams was solely dedicated to her tennis career.

She stated, “You won five of the six Grand Slams you entered over the 2002 and 2003 seasons and looked utterly dominant in the process. Then you got sidetracked with injuries, pet projects, and indifference and have won only one major in the last seven you’ve played.”

Evert reiterated her concern for the player and wished for her to do well. She said, “You’re simply too good not to be winning two Grand Slam titles a year. These are crucial years that you’ll never get back. Why not dedicate yourself entirely for the next five years and see what you can achieve?”

Evert’s concern was about Serena Williams losing her prime years to other distractions. However, the tennis player let nothing deviate her from her tennis endeavors. She treated everything else as hobbies and focused on her tennis. In 2006, she won seven grand slam titles. Moreover, Evert did not know that Williams would go on to achieve a whopping 23 grand slam titles and would continue to strive for more.
