After the growing outcry over the exhaustive schedules and the role of match balls in fatigue and injuries, there are complaints about the court too! Court woes continue to plague the WTA Finals at Yucatan Peninsula. The current number one in women’s tennis, Aryna Sabalenka lashes out her disappointment over the courts yet again. This time, it is the “disrespect” that has got her all upset.

The 25-year-old Belarusian had lost the finals of the tournament in 2022. However, now, she looks forward to not committing the same mistake and finishing the year on the highest note. With Iga Swiatek breathing down her neck, Sabalenka got off to a flyer on Sunday. She defeated Maria Sakkari (6-0,6-1) to move on to her next match on November 1. Now, can she overcome the obstacles in her pursuit in Mexico to finish the year as world number one?

Accepting and Adapting to the conditions is the only way to overcome the obstacles for Aryna Sabalenka at the WTA Finals

There is a lot at stake for the number one in Mexico. The winner of the Australian Open 2023 will retain the number one spot if she stays undefeated in the round-robin play or makes it to the finals. Aryna Sabalenka would become the first player since Serena Williams to reach the final in consecutive years. Can she do it? Only time will tell. But, the challenges are plenty. In addition to the windy conditions inside the court, the court also doesn’t appear to be up to the mark for the tennis star.

Honestly, it’s another level of disrespect from the WTA for the players. Sometimes, I don’t even feel safe to move on this court. That’s not the level I expect from the WTA Finals. Thank you for this challenge I’m facing right now of having to learn to adapt quickly to the conditions. Thank you for that. But this is not something I expect from such a high level tournament,” she said via Cancun Press.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Aryna Sabalenka is strong enough to overcome all the hurdles thrown on her path to reach the zenith. But not only Sabalenka, there have been plenty of complaints from players since their arrival.

The year-end tournament is scheduled from October 29 to November 5 in Cancun, Mexico. Players have been complaining about the courts ever since they arrived at the venue. They had raised concerns about the serious lapse in organising practice courts over the past few days. Aryna Sabalenka was shocked to see the inadequate practice court facilities at the prestigious 51-year-old tournament.

The battlefield now seems to be catching the headlines more than the battle itself, gaining disapproval from the professionals and the viewers alike. But even after all these challenges each of the players have been top-notch in their game, providing true examples of sportsmanship.
