Serena Williams is an athlete who showcases sheer dedication to her sport. Though she also knows how to differentiate determination from pushing too hard. The 23 times Grand Slam champion has always valued her health, both mental and physical.

Many accuse a player of losing focus when they take a break. To that, Serena has openly advocated the necessity of it. Speaking of which, there was a time when she backed Tiger Woods and detailed why recreation and taking some time off the sport are important.

Serena Williams’ take on breaks

Williams, who herself was making a comeback in 2016 after a pestering injury, shared some words of wisdom. She spoke about golf legend Tiger Woods’ absence from his sport for almost a year. And advised, “I say you should just try to enjoy your time off, and when you’re feeling better, get back into it, but it’s a process that you don’t want to rush.”

Thereafter, the former World no.1 added, “Everyone needs their time, so personally, I don’t get very frustrated. I enjoy it, do other things, learn about different things… When you’ve been doing this for 20 years it get really repetitive, so you can use it as a time to reboot so things don’t feel as militant.”

Williams recently took a break that spanned around a year to give proper recovery time to her hamstring injury. She walked out of the circuit from last year’s Wimbledon and made her comeback in this season’s championships. Though many questioned her focus and demanded retirement, Williams stood firm on her decision and returned when she felt right.

The six-times champion is currently competing in the last Grand Slam of the season as well as her career. She is eyeing Margaret Court’s all time record and has successfully cleared the first test.

Williams outclassed the Montenegrin tennis professional Danka Kovinić in the opening round of the Grand Slam. She took an easy straight set win of 6-3 6-3 over the 27-year-old and now is gearing up to lock horns with the World no.2 Anett Kontaveit.

Although Kontaveit is the second seed, she hasn’t given any noteworthy run in the American swing. In fact, she took the initial round exit in the WTA 1000 events of Toronto and Cincinnati. Therefore, there are chances of the 40-year-old overpowering her and advancing to the round of 32.
