Venus Williams was questioned about the possibility of playing in front of the queen and upholding that English tradition prior to her arrival.

Venus Williams once hints she won’t curtsy to the Queen
Back in 2010, when the late Queen Elizabeth made her appearance at Wimbledon. Venus Williams was among the few tennis players who got the opportunity to meet The Majesty herself. However, when the seven-time Grand Slam champion was asked about following the English traditions and questioned whether will she curtsy to the queen.

The American tennis player said, “I might not be the best one to comment on it because I’m an American. I’m not well versed on English tradition.” She added her thoughts regarding curtsying toward the royal box and said, “Hopefully I won’t get nervous. That would be my focus. But I guess I’ll cross that bridge if it ever comes.” She talked about how she will deal with the situation without getting nervous.

Further, Williams frustratedly said, “I don’t want to talk about curtsying anymore…” As she is not well aware of the traditions and does not fit right to speak anything where she is not well educated.
Williams stands on no curtsy rule
It has been a long-standing custom for tennis players at Wimbledon to be courteous to the royal box. However, since 2003, no such bowing or curtsying is necessary. The All England Lawn Tennis Club stopped the bowing practice and claimed that it no longer corresponded to the modern rules of the game, with the exception of the Queen and The Prince of Wales.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner, though, believed that it would tarnish Wimbledon’s royal box tradition and cut into that history. Notably, since then, the bowing down tradition is kept out of the Wimbledon courts.
