Eight Weeks Into Marriage With Greg Norman, Chris Evert Made a Hopeful Revelation About Her Future -‘I’d Better Be Happy’

Chris Evert has had an outstanding professional tennis career. With each year that passed, her career graph rose to new heights. However, in contrast, she experienced difficulties in her own personal life. The 18-time Grand Slam winner had three failed marriages before finding true love. At the time, she was married to tennis great John Lloyd.

Soon after, she began a new relationship with Olympic skier Andy Mill, only to end it and begin dating former Australian golfer Greg Norman. Though they had a lot in common, her relationship with Norman ultimately ended because of the influence of their shared history. Chris Evert once positively disclosed her future with her ex-husband Greg Norman eight weeks into their marriage.

In 2008, tennis great Evert attended the US Open‘s 8th annual USTA Serves’ OPENing Gala in New York City’s Queens. She was quite upbeat about her future with ex-husband Greg Norman when she spoke to PEOPLE about their then-two-month-old marriage.

It’s only [eight] weeks, I’d better be happy! Or else, I’m in big trouble!”, said the 67-year-old. She further spoke about her children and the plans, saying, “We all have kids now. We were just talking about is it better for kids to be good at everything, all sports, or be great at one thing.

Talking about their marriage, the former tennis-pro Evert married Norman in 2008. But unfortunately, the couple quickly realized after their wedding that they were fundamentally incompatible. The couple had an argument, and they split in secrecy after only 15 months of marriage.

Evert’s health struggles after her marriage failures

After her unsuccessful marriages, Evert lost her younger sister and was later hospitalized with cancer. The seven-time French Open winner, whose sister Jeanne Evert Dublin died from the same condition, was found to carry the gene variants that cause it. Then, during a routine hysterectomy, doctors discovered the early stages of ovarian cancer that had been threatening her life.

Later, Evert underwent six rounds of chemotherapy with the support of her ex-husband to eradicate cancer. She is now safe and has returned to her ESPN anchoring duties. She worked for the broadcast crew when tennis great Serena Williams finally retired.
