Coming to the artistic gymnastics event, team Russia ended USA’s dominance in the finals for the first time in eleven years. The American gymnastic team won two consecutive gold medals at 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics respectively.

Ahead of the finals, America’s star gymnast Simone Biles decided to withdraw, and this gave Russia enough confidence to pull out a stunning victory.

Congratulating the team on their marvelous achievement, Maria Sharapova tweeted, “Beautiful, Elegant, and without fear”.

In her lone participation at the Summer Olympics in 2021(London), Sharapova was given the honor of being the Russian flag-bearer. She became the first woman to carry Russian’s national flag in the Olympics opening ceremony.

It was a memorable stint from Maria as she reached the finals in women’s singles by defeating the likes of Laura Robson, Sabine Lisicki, and Kim Clijsters.

In the finals, Sharapova was thrashed in straight sets by the 23-time grand slam champion, Serena Williams. The Russian tennis star had mixed-results since making her comeback in 2017 after year-long doping ban.
