After an action-packed first day of the quarterfinals at the US Open 2021, last eight matches resumed on Wednesday. In an absolute humdinger, British teenager Emma Raducanu took on Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. It was a battle of similar game styles, with both players liking to hit flat. It was the British sensation who continued her dream run, overcoming Bencic in straight sets.

As the match kicked off, it was the teenager who took control right from the offset. The games moved at a fast pace, with quick exchanges. Within no time, Raducanu dominated the set to claim it 6-3. She was seemingly enjoying the sunny conditions more than her Swiss opponent, who was slow off the blocks. The 18-year-old defied what the rankings said of her, to race ahead within the hour mark.

In the second set, the initial exchanges proved to be even. At 2-2 however, the youngster rose to the occasion again. She struck clean returns of the Bencic serve, which was missing the x-factor accuracy. In addition, she threw in multiple double faults (5), which didn’t help her cause. All in all, the British competitor was faster and more in the zone on the day. With the help of her relentless power, Emma Raducanu romped to a 6-3 6-4 win.

Teenage duo of Raducanu and Fernandez re-write history
18-year-old Raducanu is not the only teenager to enter the semifinals. Along with her, Canadian sensation Leylah Fernandez has also made the last-4 at Flushing Meadows this year. They achieved contrasting victories en route to victory, but have made it nonetheless. And after the historic wins, Raducanu and Fernandez have added their names to a record that was last breached in 2009.

After booking their spot in the semis, the teenage prodigies have ensured that this is the first time since 2009 that there are 2 teenagers in the US Open semifinals. In the open era, this record has been achieved a total of eleven times. The pair join some elite names in this list, including Caroline Wozniacki, Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

Can the young duo go even further in New York this year. If they both make the final, it will surely be a dream battle between two fighters of the next generation. But in order to do so, Raducanu and Fernandez surely have their tasks cut out.
